Barbering Level 2

Below is a description of our Gents Hairdressing / Barbering Training, outlining the qualifications you will achieve and the units and areas you will cover throughout your training as well as other important information such as course duration and funding.

Qualifications
  • Training in Barbering
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
  • Key Skill Application of Number Level 1
  • Key Skill Communication Level 1
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
Units covered There are 6 mandatory units:

  • Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Advise and consult with client
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Cut hair using basic barbering techniques
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish men’s hair

You are also required to take at least one optional unit from each optional group, depending on credit size:

Optional Group 1

  • Create basic patterns in hair
  • Perm and neutralise hair
  • Change men’s hair colour

Optional Group 2

  • Fulfil salon reception duties
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • Promote additional services or products to clients
Who is it for? Barbering Training is for anyone who’s serious about a career in Gents Hairdresing. There are options to suit individual needs and aspirations.
Cost 16 – 18 free (employment in a salon needed) and 19 – 24 is free if employed in a salon or universal credit. £3,000 if unemployed and not in receipt of any benefit. 24+ – free if on Universal Credit. £840 if employed in a different industry and £3,000 if unemployed and not in receipt of any benefit – may be eligible for student loan.
Duration up to 23 months for 16 – 18 year olds and up to 12 months for 19+

Assessment method The NVQ Diploma is assessed in the workplace or a realistic working environment. The qualifications are likely to call for a variety of assessment methods and the national occupational standards define what is to be assessed. Methods of assessment include:

  • Observation of performance
  • Questioning
  • Knowledge assessments with both online and paper tests available
